 Exploring the space in between

Chinese by ethnicity but educated in public schools with English as the first language, I am typical of children of my era growing up in1970s post-colonial Singapore. Due to exposure to a diversity of cultures from a young age, we naturally embrace both Eastern and Western ideology and identify with both cultures to varying degrees.

As a natural extension, my art practice explores the theme of identity amidst diaspora. Art, to me, is a borderless universal language that speaks to all, yet has the unique ability to mean different things to different people. Inspired by popular culture, fashion, graphic design and architecture, I am especially interested in exploring the space in between. Drawing from life experiences, memories and observations, the work documents the world as I perceive it, living in this time and age, and in the part of the world my family has laid its roots.

While familiar with classical drawing and painting techniques, I'm trying to push the boundary by incorporating sewing and crafting techniques in my art making process. Ultimately, I hope to find the happy balance between deliberate composition and instinctive creative expression.
