The public housing blocks that house 78% of Singapore's residents was the inspiration for this piece. More commonly known as HDB flats (HDB stands for Housing Development Board), these blocks feature widely in the island's landscape and are typically fitted with windows made from tinted glass to shield its inhabitant from the harsh tropical sun and provide some respite from the heat. Some blocks cater for shops on the ground floor, giving residents access to freshly cooked meals, household provisions, barber services and other conveniences to support daily living.
