This painting explores the concept of Fast x Slow. I started with mark making on the back of the canvas and followed up with the much slower activity of handstitching using a saddlestitch technique more typically associated with leather crafting. The edges were trimmed with machine stitches and the mounting was modelled after a scroll in line with the calligraphic nature of the work. As all sewists know, one can only be successful by working calmly. Haste is the recipe for disaster. Though time consuming, this process reaps its own rewards, creating time and space for meditation and reflection.
